The Process.
Every portrait is personal, and so is the way it's made. It starts with choosing the right canvas size. There are a few different options depending on what you're looking for, and each one has its own timing and level of detail. On average, a full portrait takes about a month to paint.
Choose your style.
Max offers two main portrait styles. The first is alla prima — a quicker, expressive wet-on-wet technique that gives a softer, more playful look. The second is indirect painting — a slower, traditional method with layered details for a highly realistic finish. Each has its own timeline and vibe. You can explore both styles in detail on their dedicated pages to find the perfect fit for you.
Painting begins.
Once the photo is agreed and the details are sorted, Max starts painting in his East Yorkshire studio. He uses oils and combines traditional and expressive techniques, taking time to bring out the emotion and character in each portrait. Everything is done by hand, without shortcuts.
Send the photo.
Next, you’ll upload a reference image. A clear, well-lit photo works best, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. If you’re unsure or don’t have the right photo, we can help you choose one, or even arrange to take a new one together. It’s more about capturing personality than technical quality.
Receive.
When the painting is ready, we carefully package and send it out to you. If you’re nearby, local collection or hand delivery can be arranged too.
Usually, we send out the finished paintings as soon as they’re ready. After about six months, when the paint has fully dried, we offer to come back and apply a protective varnish over the top. It’s totally up to you whether you want this done or not.
